Embarking on a full- scale renovation of their home in Austin’s Westlake neighborhood, homeowners Courtney and Ben Moss enlisted the help of Blair Burton Interiors to marry their styles and bring their vision to life. Courtney is a Louisiana native with a Southern traditional aesthetic while Ben leans a bit more modern in his tastes.

Courtney desired a formal dining table, saturated colors, and antique floors while elements like a big steel door were important to Ben. One of Blair’s challenges was adapting the couple’s style preferences to the location. For example, the couple initially wanted antique heart of pine flooring, but this type of flooring is difficult to source and cost-prohibitive in a place like Austin, Texas. Instead, Blair used oak flooring with plenty of visible character to give a similar look.

The clients naturally gravitated toward grays and whites when choosing a color scheme. Blair enjoyed working with them to identify a palette that they wanted, adding myriad shades of blue and plenty of textural elements.

Blair’s clients love to entertain. She worked to make the spaces family and guest-friendly where no room was off limits. But they also wanted spaces that were pretty and felt formal.

The living room, for instance, is the main access point to the backyard. However, it can be seen from the front door. Fabrics needed to be both durable and style-forward. The sofas and Coggin chairs are upholstered in kid-friendly velvets that are nearly indestructible, and Blair’s team installed a hard-wearing patterned wool rug as opposed to a sisal.
